New Iberia caretaker charged for leaving baby in car
New Iberia, LA (NBC33) — A New Iberia woman was arrested Tuesday after leaving a child that she was caring for locked in a hot car in a Walmart parking lot.
According to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the Walmart on East Admiral Doyle Drive in New Iberia around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. They found the seven-month-old locked in the unattended vehicle and were forced to break a window of the car to rescue the child.
The vehicle’s owner, Crystal Derouen, 42, showed up shortly after officers removed the baby from the car. Police took Derouen into custody and charged her with cruelty to a juvenile. She was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail, then later released on bond.
The baby was returned to its mother.
