This is an NBC33 News update: Sad news from the Baton Rouge Zoo this afternoon. The newest addition to the family has passed away. Staff found the baby giraffe, who was born on November 12, weak in its enclosure today. The baby was taken to our on-site animal hospital, and despite treatment from Zoo veterinary staff, she passed away.
"We are all saddened by this sudden loss," Phil Frost, Zoo Director, said in a press release. "All of our animals receive such excellent care at the Zoo, and no one feels this loss greater than our dedicated staff."
BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA) – A new arrival to BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo has everyone excited. The first baby giraffe born at the zoo since 2001 made its way to the world on Friday, Nov. 12.
This is the 18th giraffe baby born at the Baton Rouge Zoo. The new baby is currently on exhibit with its mother and great grandmother.
“A birth is one of the most exciting things about the Zoo,” said Zoo Director Phil Frost said in a press release. “We will watch mom and baby giraffe closely to make sure both are comfortable. It is exciting to share the birth of our baby giraffe with the community, and we hope many people will visit with their family and friends this holiday season.”
