Walgreens, Express Scripts unable to reach prescription agreement
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Patients who use Express Scripts are finding they can no longer get their prescriptions filled at Walgreens.
This country's largest drugstore chain and Express Scripts unable to agree on prescription reimbursements for the new year.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana contracts with Express Scripts to negotiate prescription prices.
Kermit Crawford, with Walgreens, says they will work closely with employers and health care providers to make sure there's no disruption in getting patients their medicine.
"We're certainly in the business of filling prescriptions,” Crawford explained. “We want to remain in the network for express scripts for our long standing customers.
“Our real thing is about the value of community pharmacy to both payers and patients,” he added. “As long as we can get compensated fairly for that value that we bring we're certainly willing to negotiate and work with express scripts."
But as of now, there is no deal between Walgreens and Express Scripts. Walgreens is now offering a special discount on its membership to its savings club to try to offset the cost and inconvenience.
