NBC News — The United Nations War Crimes Tribunal will hand down its verdict in the trial against Charles Taylor for atrocities in Sierra Leone thursday. The verdict comes nearly five years after the former Liberian president went on trial in the Netherlands.
Taylor, the first African leader to go before an international tribunal, faced eleven counts of murder, rape, conscripting child soldiers and sexual slavery. Atrocities stem back to the wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone in the 1990s that killed more than 250,000 people.
