NBC News — A U.S. border patrol agent killed a teenager after opening fire on a group of people throwing rocks across the Mexican border. The shooting outraged Mexico's government. The foreign ministry released a statement slamming the attack as a disproportionate use of force and asked American authorities to investigate. U.S. border patrol agents in Nogales, Arizona were responding to reports of suspected drug smuggling activity wednesday night.
The border patrol said agents watched smugglers abandon illegal drugs before returning to Mexico. As agents approached to investigate, people started throwing rocks from across the border, and one agent opened fire. The mayor of Nogales, Mexico condemned the shooting. The Sonora state attorney general's office in Mexico said the victim was a 16 year old, but did not confirm the boy had been shot by a U.S. border agent.
