NBC News — The United Nations monitoring mission in Syria continues. Ceasefire monitors are scheduled to head to the country's north monday to visit the restive towns of Homs, Hama and Idlib. The U.N. observer team, with more than 250 members on the ground, has so far failed to stop the bloodshed in Syria.
Despite this, U.N. officials say the mission has had a quote "calming effect" in certain areas. The revolt in Syria began 15 months ago. The U.N. estimates the conflict has killed more than 9000 people. Activists say that figure is actually much higher.
