NBC News — Tunisians woke up to a tense calm this morning, after a day of protests over the assassination of a prominent secular politician. Opposition leader Chokri Belaid was gunned down outside his home in the capital on wednesday.
His death has been widely condemned, including by the country's democratically elected Islamist government. Mass protests broke out on Tunis streets following the killing, and protesters battled police in the streets of other cities. Tunisia is considered to be the birthplace of the Arab Spring.
