Tropical Storm Ernesto drenched a Honduran port city monday as it moved through the western Caribbean toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The National Hurricane Center reported that three to five inches of rain fell along the northern coast of Honduras. Forecasters said Ernesto packed sustained winds of 65 miles per hour monday afternoon, but could pick up speed and power to become a hurricane later tuesday.

The storm is expected to move into the southern part of the Gulf of Mexico by thursday, but it is not clear if it will interrupt oil and gas operations in the Gulf. Hurricane warnings have been issued for part of the Yucatan Peninsula's east coast and the entire coast of Belize. August and September are usually the most active months of the Atlantic Caribbean hurricane season.
