NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Students, faculty and the community remember the tragedy that took place five years ago today on the campus of Virginia Tech University.
32 people were killed when gunman Seung-Hui Cho opened fire on the Blacksburg campus before turning the gun on himself.
This is the first year the school hasn't suspended classes to mark the anniversary of the shooting. School officials say the return to classes reflects the lives of those slain.
Virginia governor Bob McDonnell will address a campus wide candlelight vigil tonight.
Other campus events will include a display of memorial items sent to Virginia Tech from other colleges and universities.
