Corsicana authorities are investigating a case in which a baby was left abandoned in a handbag under a homeowner's carport.

At 8:53 p.m. Sunday, the Corsicana Police Department were dispatched to the 500 block of North 38th Street to reports of a found baby. The newborn boy was found towel-wrapped, incased in a pillowcase inside a handbag. The infant still had the umbilical cord attached. The Hispanic or white baby was taken to the Navarro Regional Hospital for treatment. Child Protective Services was notified.

Law enforcement contacted regional agencies and hospitals about the abandoned baby in case they encountered a woman that appeared to have recently given birth and possibly needed medical attention, but did not have a baby or explanation to where the baby was resting. Corsicana Independent School District officials were also notified.

Det. Greg Cloud has been assigned to conduct the follow-up investigation. Anyone with information that may help identify the mother of the newborn is strongly encouraged to contact the Corsicana Police Department at (903) 654-4902 or Det. Cloud at (903) 654-4914.
