AUSTIN, TX (NBC33) — A Texas State Representative was arrested for DWI after she allegedly caused a crash in downtown Austin. The city is currently hosting the annual South by Southwest festival.
Our sister station KTSM reports that the crash occurred at roughly 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13. We’re told State Representative Naomi Gonzales (El Paso) rear-ended another car causing it to crash into a cyclist.
Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.
"I would like to say first that my thoughts and prayers go out to the other persons involved," Gonzalez said. "I hope you understand, I won't be commenting further until the legal matters have been resolved."
The chairman of the El Paso County Democratic Party says while he knows Gonzalez is a good person who made a mistake, her future could be in jeopardy.
"You serve the community that elected you so therefore, whatever you do personally can reflect on those who voted for you," said Chairman Glen Maya.
Gonzales works in Austin and has district offices in El Paso. According to her biography she was the youngest female and only Hispanic female of the incoming State Representative 2011 freshman class.
