Comedian Stephen Colbert will host a pair of high dollar fundraisers this month for his sister Elizabeth, who is vying for South Carolina's vacant seat in the U.S. Congress.

The events are slated to take place in New York and Washington, and carry a minimum price tag of $500, with special "event chair" tickets going as high as $10,000.

Elizabeth Colbert Busch - an official with Clemson University's wind turbine drive testing facility -- will be the Democratic name on the ballot in the May 7 general election.

Her Republican rival will be determined Tuesday in a runoff vote between former Gov. Mark Sanford and Curtis Bostic, a former Charleston city councilman.

Colbert Busch's brother has campaigned for her in the past, including hosting an event at a bowling alley.

In the invite to the Washington and New York events, Stephen Colbert writes that "Lulu and I have been through a lot together, and I know she is a bright, competent, caring woman who will work hard on behalf of all the citizens of South Carolina's 1st Congressional District."

He also calls Mark Sanford a "renewed hike-lover," a reference to the former governor's explanation of his absence from public life in 2009 as a hike on the Appalachian Trail.

It was later revealed he was carrying out an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina.

"It is rare for me to take an active role in anyone's political ambitions other than my own.

But this is different - beyond a brother's love, I truly believe Lulu is the best candidate to represent my beloved Lowcountry in the United States Congress," Colbert continues.
