The number of people filing for unemployment in Spain rose just over four percent in January compared to the previous month. Four point six million people in the country are out of work, the highest number of people since records began 16 years ago. At 22.9%, Spain's jobless rate is the highest in the 17 nation Eurozone.

The number of people in Spain who joined the ranks of the unemployed in January was nearly as high as in January 2009, the worst monthly figure in Spain's history. People lined up outside an employment office in Madrid thursday trying to find work. The Spanish government is expected to announce labor market reforms this month in an effort to make it easier for companies to hire and fire workers.
