NBC News — Ahead of the birth of the world's newest nation, preparations for Southern Sudan's declaration of independence on saturday are in full swing. Hundreds of soldiers, police officers, fire fighters, prison and wildlife service officials as well as members of various religious, youth and women's groups paraded in the streets of Juba wednesday.
Juba will be the capital of Southern Sudan. Regional watchers say the new country faces numerous challenges, including internal insecurity, an uneasy relationship with its former civil war foe in the north, and a need to build infrastructure. Despite the tough road ahead, many people in the new capital voiced their excitement about their new found freedom.
