NBC News — Despite an official end to the war in Iraq, violence is ongoing and has become almost exclusively sectarian. One of the worst hit areas is Mosul, there Al-Qaeda militants launch repeated attacks on Shi'ites. Al-Qaeda considers Shi'ites to be apostates.
It is Iraq's responsibility now to keep the streets safe, that's because the U.S. military pulled out of Iraq in Decemeber of last year. Many blame Iraq's new government for not doing enough to stop the violence. Despite this, violence is way down since the height of sectarian violence in 2006.
