Scandal-plagued coach loses battle with cancer
NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A candlelight vigil was held on the Penn State Campus Sunday evening after the passing of longtime football coach Joe Paterno.
The vigil was organized by a current sophomore at the school, and featured speeches from current and former Penn State players and hymns by the PSU Blue Band.
Paterno died early Sunday at the age of 85.
He had been diagnosed with lung cancer in November.
Paterno was beloved at Penn State, where he served as head football coach for nearly 46 years.
His legacy was tainted, however, when he was fired by the school in November over his handling of the child sexual abuse allegations against former assistant Jerry Sandusky.
