NBC News — A law debating back to medieval times has forced some 1000 Albanian families into house arrest. Under the harsh rules of the Kanun, a 15th century Balkan code, wronged parties are given the right to kill a male member of an offending family in retribution. The code, which is not officially recognized in Albanian law, is frequently imposed nonetheless and the recent deaths of a 17 year old and her grandfather has brought it back into the mainstream.
The murders were in retribution for a man killed two years ago. A nationwide reconciliation committee concerned by an increasing number of revenge killings has restarted a campaign to reconcile families currently embroiled in the so-called blood feuds. Until then, more than 1600 families are under house arrest fearing for their lives.
