Rebels in African country of Mali overthrow the government

NBC News — Rebel soldiers in the African country of Mali said thursday they have overthrown the government. Gunfire rang out throughout the capital overnight as soldiers took over the streets and attacked the presidential palace. Rebel leaders said they lacked arms and resources to face a separatist insurgency in the northern part of the country.
Later a number of rebel soldiers took over the state TV station and said they had taken over the government. They said the constitution is suspended indefinitely and all the institutions of the republic are dissolved until further notice. A former government official said the president has gone into hiding.
