Police: Woman strangled while holding newborn

A man was arrested after allegedly assaulting and strangling his girfriend against a wall while she held their daughter in her arms.

Robin E. Evaro, 20, faced charges of aggravated battery against a household member causing great bodliy harm, a third degree felony.

Las Cruces Police said an argument between the couple at the victim's home on El Camino Real. They said at some point Evaro became aggressive and struck the woman’s face while she was holding their young daughter.

The police report indicated that Evaro then placed his hands around the woman’s neck, forcing her against a kitchen cabinet while she continued to hold their daughter. The woman escaped and went to a bathroom but Evaro followed and, again, placed his hands around her neck and held her down.

Evaro left the residence when relatives of the woman arrived. He was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $10,000.

Detectives are continuing their investigation and additional charges against Evaro are possible.
