NBC NEWS — Sarah Palin showed up to enjoy the Iowa spotlight on the day between the debate and the straw poll, saying she's still considering a run -- but she’s being overshadowed by another conservative icon, Rick Perry, who has decided.
Perry, the Republican Governor of Texas, will declare tomorrow in South Carolina, saying, according to a draft, "The change we seek will never emanate out of Washington. It will come from the windswept prairies of middle America -- the hearts and minds of God-fearing Americans."
Perry hosted an evangelical rally last weekend, and his Christian conservatism could have powerful appeal in Iowa.
Both Perry and Michele Bachmann will compete for the same tea party voters.
“As president of the United States, I will only introduce balanced budgets”, declared Bachmann who, in Thursday night’s debate, mixed things up with fellow Republican candidate Tim Pawlenty.
"In congress her record of accomplishment and results is non-existent", said Pawlenty Thursday’s debate.
Pawlenty has to do well in tomorrow's straw poll.
“Because if he does not win or at least finish a really strong second to Michele Bachmann, with substantial distance between him and everybody else, it's really hard to see how he continues to raise money”, said Professor Dennis Goldford of Drake University.
