Onstar is now open to everyone, or roughly 90,000 vehicles to be exact. Although the technology has been around for 15 years, it's been exclusive to G.M. vehicles. Now, a replacement rear view mirror make this option available in nearly all cars.

It takes about an hour to install, and with it comes access to all the Onstar features. Some are even lifesaving.

"In the event of a crash, there's really no substitute,” Greg Ross, V.P. of Business for Onstar, explained. “Your cell phone, you may not be able to use your cell phone. We've had a lot of stories of customers not being able to get their cell phone in the event of a serious crash and Onstar is automatically placing a call getting you help immediately in a way that you can count on. "

The cost of the mirror plus installation is just under $400. After that, Onstar charges an $18 monthly service fee.
