NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A new treatment option requires a long term commitment but is giving hope to some long time allergy sufferers.
Specially formulated drops are designed to fight exactly what bothers you.
"If you're allergic to several different types of grasses and weeds you'll get drops to deal with allergies in those areas," explained Dr. Lou Perretta of Doctors Express.
The drop-in clinic is the first in Oregon to offer the treatment.
"You're training your body and its immune system but that takes place over many months and can take two to three years," said Perretta.
The idea is by repeatedly putting an antigen into the body your immune system will recognize it and not react with the usual congestion that comes with allergies.
Karli Vidourek recently went through the testing required to formulate her own allergy fighting drops.
"I'm just really sick of the watery, itchy eyes and sneezing all day," she said as she underwent the 30 minute procedure.
Seventy different antigens were placed on her back and she reacted almost immediately with large welts and redness on the skin.
Karli found out she's allergic to grasses and weeds.
The allergy drops which she'll use once daily will cost about $60 a month and aren't covered by insurance.
The treatment, according to Dr. Perretta, is widely used in Europe and he expects it to get FDA approval in this country.
While she waits for her drops to take hold, Karli plans to make other changes after the skin testing helped determine what bothers her most.
"I'm not going to be doing any yard work, I'll leave that for my husband," she joked.
