NASA's "Curiosity" rover has landed on Mars. Curiosity touched down at 1:17 a.m. Eastern time.

Employees at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California cheered as they received Curiosity's first signal 14 minutes later.

Minutes later the first images from the rover appeared.

The rover landed inside a massive crater on the planet's surface.

It was NASA's seventh landing on Mars, and was considered a test for future manned landings.
