NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A New Jersey mayor has found himself on the wrong side of the law.
Police say Mayor Fred Grant of East Greenwich Township was caught speeding while drunk early Wednesday morning.
"Breath test was conducted. Mr. Grant, Mayor Grant had a reading higher than the legal limit. And he was charged with DWI," said Police Chief Barry Jenkins.
Police say Grant was clocked driving 91 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The mayor is calling it a personal matter and declined to talk to reporters at a township event Thursday night.
He did issue a statement to township employees that reads in part "I want to apologize to all of you for the negativity that the situation will bring to our wonderful town. I made a mistake and will not let this impact my duties as mayor."
