One driver is dead, and four others recover at area hospitals after a failed stop at a stop sign caused a two-car collision in Anthony.

Andrew Valenzuela, 22, died at the scene after the Honda Civic he was driving collided with a pickup truck on the intersection of Westside Drive and Vinton Road. Two of his passengers, a 21-year-old pregnant woman and a 2-year-old boy were transported with serious injuries. The woman gave birth to a baby girl shortly after arriving at the hospital, who is also fighting for her life.

The driver of the pickup truck suffered head lacerations however his injuries were non-life-threatening. Investigators say he tried to veer left to avoid Valenzuela’s car, but was unable to avoid it. The car was sent spinning into a farm field northwest of the intersection.

Deputies say it appears no one in the Honda was wearing a seat belt, and a child’s safety seat in the back of the vehicle wasn’t securely installed.
