If you've called a pediatrician lately for an appointment you may have discovered you'll have to wait for the doctor to see your child.

That's because there is a nationwide shortage.

There is an even bigger need for pediatric specialists.

Chanson Savakinus has leukemia. His family is fortunate there are doctors locally who can treat him. He is forced to undergo six blood transfusions a month.

"It's very important that we have enough doctors going forward," said his mother, Destiny Savakinus.

Chanson needed an orthopedic surgeon after fracturing his spine. His family found one at Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.

"I can't imagine having to travel when your child has a critical illness or life threatening illness," Savakinus said.
