NBC NATIONAL NEWS — An 8-month-old was killed when her mom's SUV crashed into a tree in Montgomery County, Texas and the mother is being investigated for driving while intoxicated.
Ashli Heil, 28, was driving this suburban, with her 8-month old baby in the back seat, according to DPS, when she lost control, went airborn, into a ditch and then slammed into a tree. The scene was on FM 1484 in Cut N' Shoot near Conroe.
Investigators think Heil was speeding and drunk at the time of the crash.
"Just the initial contact with EMS and fire personnel on scene, they smelled it on her, the trooper got her with life flight here and troopers went with her and saw signs of intoxication down there, too," Terry Barnhill, DPS, explained.
The crash happened in the late evening on Monday, April 2. The tree is seen inside the SUV, which is the exact spot the child was strapped in.
"Just the way the impact came in with the tree - the baby didn't stand a chance," Terry Barnhill, DPS, said.
Witnesses to the crash told crash scene investigators Heil was driving erratically and crossing into oncoming lanes of traffic just seconds before she drove off the road. We are told she was headed home at the time.
"The front wheels were trying to turn the curve, but they just didn't turn, they just kept going straight," Becky Paschal, witness to the crash, recalled.
