NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A school in Brownsville, Texas was in full lockdown mode today after local police opened fire on a student that they say brought a gun to school.
The name of the student has not yet been released, but police say the 15 year-old male subject was carrying a handgun on school property.
Brownsville Independent School District officials say local police officers were immediately notified and arrived on the scene within minutes. That's when the shooting began.
"(He) brandished a weapon in the hallway at approximately 8:00 a.m. this morning”, stated Drue Brown with the BISD. “The student was engaged by officers in the hallway, and he was shot."
There is no word yet on whether the eighth grade student discharged his own weapon, but a Brownsville police officer opened fire after reports indicate the student engaged the officer.
The teenager was transferred to Valley Baptist Medical Center immediately after the shooting, but was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m.
BISD officials maintain no other students were injured in the incident, and for precautionary measures, lock downed the school almost two hours after the shooting took place.
"I can assure parents that no other students were injured. Employees are safe. Students are safe," said Brown. “They are clearing the school classroom by classroom. Searching the school, just making sure everything is safe, and then they will relocate the students to Porter High School. "
How the student gained access to the handgun and his motive for bringing it onto school property is still unknown, although Brownsville police did detain a student witness for police questioning.
Classes were canceled for the rest of the day and normal operations for the middle school aren't expected to resume until Friday.
BISD officials say school counselors will be available to talk to students, parents, and employees over the next several days.
