It's a first for Mexico, a major political party there puts a female presidential candidate on the ballot. The National Action Party chose Josefina Vazquez Mota as its nominee. She won at least 55 percent of the vote, well ahead of the second runner-up Ernesto Cordero.

Mota, a former Education Minister, will now go against the nominee from Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, Enrique Pena Nieto. That party has ruled Mexico for most of the last century and national polls show that Mota trails Nieto by 20 percentage points.
