It's the first meeting of the new term for Metro Council members in East Baton Rouge Parish, and they are debating a possible payout to dozens of Scotlandville Residents.

Residents in University Place, who live next to a sewer treatment plant, want to be bought out of their homes because of the health dangers and the smell.

The city attorney's office drafted a settlement, which would cost roughly $6 million. They nearly had a deal last month, but the old council came up one vote short.

Now, the new council has to decide if it wants to support a settlement, and if the money is still available, since it was tied to a construction grant. Approval from the council would be a start, but not enough to fully satisfy those residents.

The appraisal of their homes would come after they sign the agreement, so they wouldn't know how much money they would actually get, and that has them nervous.

NBC33's David Lippman will have updates on the council meeting on NBC33 News at 6:30 and 10.
