The Surgeon General already warns that pregnancy and smoking is a dangerous mix, but a pregnant, smoking woman in Bellingham was in more danger than she anticipated when a man allegedly pulled a gun on her, the Bellingham Herald reported.

Police told the Herald that the woman was walking in the 700 block of East Holly Street near downtown Bellingham at about noon on Wednesday when a man in a blue Dodge pickup pulled up alongside her and unrolled the passenger window.

The man reportedly asked the woman "Who the heck smokes when they're pregnant?"

The woman, who according to the Herald was smoking a cigarette and later told police she was eight months pregnant, answered "I do."

The two continued talking, until the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the woman, police told the Herald. He drove away, and the woman called 911.

Minutes later, an officer pulled over a blue Dodge pickup near the intersection of Texas and James Streets. The driver, 24, admitted he had confronted the woman but denied he had pulled a gun on her, the paper said.

Police said they found two Glock semiautomatic .45-caliber handguns in the console after the driver consented to a search.

The man was arrested on first-degree assault charges, according to police. He reportedly had a prior record that included disorderly conduct and traffic violations.
