NBC News — The leader of the coup that overthrew the government of Mali said thursday that the African country's elected president is safe. Captain Amadou Sanogo spoke to the country's state run TV station hours after he and other rebels fired on the presidential palace and overthrew the government. The location of President Amadou Toure is unknown after the rebels overran the palace in Mali's capital wednesday night.
The rebels showed video of the palace scared by gunfire. Captain Sanogo said he doesn't want to hurt anyone. Rebels said they overthrew the government because it was not providing enough funds for the army to fight insurgents in the northern part of the country. Meanwhile those rebels moved south to take over positions vacated by government forces during the coup.
