NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The U.S. economy added 163,000 jobs last month, the biggest jump since February. Still, the unemployment rate went up a notch to 8.3 percent.
There are only three more jobs reports before an election in which jobs may decide who gets the job of president.
"The middle class is hurting. I'm going to change that and get more jobs and more take-home pay," Mitt Romney has promised.
President Obama, meanwhile, is focusing on the turnaround already underway.
"We've been able to create four and a half million jobs, and half a million jobs in manufacturing, and we've saved an auto industry," he said.
That's little comfort to those unemployed and still searching.
October's jobs numbers come out just four days before the election.
