NBC News — Japanese researchers say they've created the world's first artificial retina made from human embryonic stem cells. A team of researchers led at Japan's Riken Institute announced the development this week.

Researchers claimed to have used human embryonic stem cells to form what resembled a three-dimensional eye cup. They say the man-made retina can convert light stimuli into electrical signals, and nerve cells that convey the signals to the brain appear to have formed layers. Researchers say their research could lead to new treatments for eye diseases.
