An air unit of Japan's maritime self-defense force has opened an operation base to fight pirates off the coast of Somalia. Japan spent $60 million to build the base at the International Airport in Djibouti, a country located above Somalia in Northeast Africa.

The base has space for three aircraft, accommodation for service members, a kitchen and a gym. Japan's maritime self-defense force has deployed two destroyers and an air unit in the country since 2009. Japanese, U.S., and French forces are working together to escort commercial ships and monitor pirates in the region.
