NBC News — Israeli tanks are patrolling the Golan Heights tuesday, one day after both countries exchanged fire. Monday, Israel fired tank shells across the border in response to a Syrian mortar shell that struck their side of the border. It was the second time in days that Israel had fired across the disengagement line drawn at the end of a war in 1973.
Israeli military sources said they made a direct hit on a Syrian artillery battery. Israel is the third country to be hit by spillover violence from the Syrian conflict. Fighting has also taken place in Lebanon and Turkey.
