There is major concern among Egyptian minorities that the recent call for help from Islamic scholars in the rewriting the nation's constitution could undermine Egypt's fragile democracy. An ultra conservative group in parliament is demanding that Egypt's new constitution be re-written with the principles of Islamic law in mind.

Opponents say it would only exacerbate Egypt's volatile politics and make it harder to heal social tensions exposed by the overthrow of autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak last year. Some liberals committed to a more secular state have already abandoned the constitutional assembly and challenged it in court, saying Islamists have too much control and want to turn Egypt into an Iran-style theocracy.
