NBC News — Iraqi President Jalal Talabani is recovering a day after reportedly suffering a stroke. Medical officials say it took them the better part of the day to stabilize the 79 year old. Doctors say he is getting better, but gave few other details of his condition.
The Iraqi president is a rare unifying figure who is seen to rise above the country's ethnic and sectarian fault lines. He has been actively involved in trying to mediate an ongoing crisis between Iraq's central government and the country's Kurdish minority.
