Chilean President Sebastian Pinera joined scientists and engineers wednesday to officially inaugurate the Alma Telescope as part of the world's most powerful observatory.

While the telescope has been functioning since 2011, its 50 antennas are finally working together for maximum efficiency.

The $1.3 billion observatory in the Chilean desert promises to look deeper into space than ever before, according to scientists.

Thijs de Graauw, the director of the project, says scientists will now have far more detailed and vivid images of space, eclipsing even the Hubble Space Telescope.
