Dozens of camera stationed all around the criminal courts complex but no one got to see Jennifer Hudson until she took the stand.

The singer and actress fought tears as she remembered her slain mother, brother, and nephew.

Dressed in all black she remembered her grade school classmate, William Balfour, as someone she said she tried to stay away from.

Hudson said her family did not like how he treated his estranged wife, Julia Hudson.

"None of us wanted her to marry him," Hudson said, "I told her over and over not to marry him."

Prosecutors say Balfour killed Darnell Donnerson, Jason Hudson and Julian King in a fit of jealous rage.

They recounted threats Balfour repeatedly made against Julia and her family.

Assistant state's attorney Veryl Gambino related one of those threats to the jury;

"Julia, if you leave me, I will kill you. I will kill your entire family. You will be the last to die," Balfour allegedly told Hudson after she asked him for a divorce and told him she was seeing another man.

The defense presented an entirely different theory of the case; saying Jason Hudson was targeted because he was a major drug dealer in the Englewood neighborhood.

Attorney Anne Thompson faulted police and prosecutors, saying "They did nothing to determine if Jason Hudson's violent business lead to these murders."

She told the jury that the murder weapon was tested for DNA and did not match Balfour.
