NBC News — As Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou headed to France to explain to European leaders his decision to call for a referendum, Greeks wednesday are expressing their anger over the decision. Greek public opinion is mixed on the measure that comes a year and a half after tough austerity cuts put in place by the government.
Prime Minister Papandreou took many lawmakers by surprise monday announcing the referendum. He gave no date or other details. The vote would be the first in Greece since 1974, that's when the monarchy was abolished by a landslide vote months after the collapse of a military dictatorship.
