Silence is apparently golden for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. At this morning's nomination event, the throwback black and white film "The Artist" led the way with six nods, including Best Film in the Comedy or Musical category.

“It's a very unique kind of film, because it's a black and white silent film without that many well-known people in it,” stated Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger.

Rounding out that category is the Kristen Wiig smash "Bridesmaids," Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," the Dramedy "50-50," and Michelle Williams in "My Week with Marilyn."

The Best Drama division features two films with five nominations each: "The Decendants," and "The Help." Three castmates from the civil rights drama film received acting mentions. Also nominated for best drama: "Hugo," "Moneyball," "War Horse," and "The Ides of March."

“George Clooney was perhaps the biggest winner of all at the Golden Globes because he was nominated for writing and directing “The Ides of March” and for starring in “The Descendants,” said Karger.

His "Ides" co-star Ryan Gosling is also in the best actor category, along with pal Brad Pitt in "Moneyball," Leonardo DiCaprio for "J Edgar," and Michael Fassbender for the movie "Shame."

Best actress selections went to a cross-dressing Glenn Close in "Albert Nobbs," Viola Davis for "The Help," Rooney Mara's portrayal of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," Meryl Streep as "The Iron Lady," and Tilda Swinton in "We Need To Talk About Kevin."

In the supporting category, French actress Bernice Bejo did a silent celebration for a nomination in her silent film.

She's up against "The Help" stars Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, Janet McTeer in "Albert Nobbs," and Shailene Woodley in "The Descendants."

Although he ruffled a few feathers last year, British bad boy Ricky Gervais will return for a third stint as host in 2012.

The awards will be handed out January 15 on NBC.
