NBC News — Paris hosted the third Friends of Syria meeting friday. Russia and China will not attend the conference but have recently shown willingness to discuss Syrian transition strategies. The countries joined world powers last weekend in Geneva to agree on a transitional government body in Syria as a step toward ending the violence.
A U.S. official said the United States and its European and Arab partners would threaten the Syrian government with global sanctions unless it implemented a peace plan that included the creation of an interim government. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising against the Syrian regime began 16 months ago.
