Glass panels fly off of high rise balconies at W Hotel in Austin
Austin, TX (KXAN) —
The luxurious W Hotel in Austin, TX, which has been open only seven months, has temporarily shut down after glass rained down from the 37-story building on July 28.
Officials announced they would replace almost 1,000 glass panels on the $300 million high rise's balconies after three of them plunged more than 20 stories to the street below on the afternoon of July 27.
The developer says the panels should be removed within a week, and traffic around the building will be impacted during the process.
No injuries were reported on either day, but four people were hurt on June 10 when a pair of panels fell into the hotel's pool area. Two of the people injured filed a lawsuit over the incident.
No word yet on what could be causing the glass to shatter.
