NBC News — Fifteen people were injured Tuesday in Gibraltar when a fuel tank exploded near a cruise ship. Officials said a spark from a nearby welder probably caused the blast and started the fire. Thick, black smoke billowed across the port, and flames shot from the fuel tank as the fire continued into the night.
The tank was close to the cruise ship "Independence of the Seas," which immediately left the port after the blast. Royal Caribbean International said 12 people on the ship were injured. Two welders working on the tank and a police officer involved in rescue efforts were also hurt. Around 30 thousand people live in the British Territory of Gibraltar, located off the tip of southern Spain.
