NATIONAL NEWS (CNN) — Those who knew Darius Powe-Reed and Zan Lockhart will tell you they were attached at the hip. They had been best friends since high school where they played football, and both lived in Sacramento.
"They did everything together," said Darius's brother, Darron. "Everytime I would see my little brother I would see him."
Now their families are planning a joint funeral. Darius, Zan, and their friend 30-year-old Lavell Elmore died Friday morning when their moving truck slammed into a tree. The three rented the truck to recycle cardboard boxes as a way to make extra money. They were coming back from the Bay Area when Darius, behind the wheel, overcorrected after attempting an unsafe lane change, and lost control.
"I can't believe it's true," said his father Darron Reed. "I don't want to believe it's true."
Saturday, family and friends gathered at the Sacramento house where Darius lived, sharing pictures and leaning on each other for support.
"It's not right," said his father. "He's supposed to bury me. Not me bury my son. That's not the order of things."
Darius graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 2010 where he played football and was voted "Most Inspirational" by his team.
"Darius touched a lot of lives in the short 20 years he was here," said his Aunt Janet Powe. "And he will have an impact."
