French president suspends military operations in Afghanistan
Friday, January 20, 2012 - 9:37am

President Nicolas Sarkozy friday announced the suspension of military operations by French troops in Afghanistan. The decision followed the deaths of four French soldiers who were shot and killed by an Afghan soldier in eastern Afghanistan. Eighty two French soldiers have been killed in the Afghan campaign.

President Sarkozy said the French army was in Afghanistan to help fight terrorism and the Taliban but not for Afghan soldiers to shoot at it. French soldiers have played a major role in training Afghan soldiers before the withdrawal of foreign troops expected in 2014. President Sarkozy raised the possibility of withdrawing French soldiers from Afghanistan early if security was not restored. Afghanistan President Muhammed Karzai is expected to visit Paris next week.
