Former president of the Philippines arrested on corruption charges

NBC News — The former president of the Philippines has been arrested and temporarily detained at the hospital where she is receiving treatment. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was arrested on accusations she misused $8.8 million in state lottery funds during her last years in office. This is the third time has been indicted and the second time she has been detained since stepping down two years ago.
The charges against Arroyo are punishable by life in prison without bail. The 65-year-old suffers from a neck ailment and has been admitted to a hospital for dehydration. She'll remain there overnight until a court order deciding whether she should be transferred jail or a government facility. Arroyo has accused her successor, who promises to rid the Philippines of corruption, of pursuing a political vendetta against her.
