Former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks has been charged with interfering with the police investigation into the phone hacking scandal in the U.K. Brooks quit as chief executive of News International in July. She faces three separate counts of "conspiracy to pervert the course of justice."

Brooks, her husband, and four others have been charged with trying to conceal evidence from police investigating the scandal. The criminal charges are the first to be filed since British police launched a new inquiry into phone hacking early last year.
