A Manatee County family is praying for the safe recovery of their 13-year-old son after he was shot just steps from the family home.
Manatee County Sheriff's deputies are now searching for the two suspects they believe are responsible for the shooting while the victim's family is speaking out exclusively to Bay News 9 and telling us they want the suspects locked up.
"It's bad," Lissett Quitanar said in an exclusive interview with Bay News 9. "It's very traumatizing."
The family of 13-year-old Jonathan Quitanar is shocked and saddened after two gunmen shot him at least half a dozen times late Monday night.
"Traumatizing because you can't help them," she said. "He was just begging me to help him."
But there was nothing his sister could do. And now, the painful images of the night are etched in her memory. Her brother is the youngest of four. They call him "the baby."
"He didn't deserve nothing," Quitanar said. "All he does is go to school and come home."
The family tells Bay News 9 that the victim, his sister, and one of their friends were sitting outside on the trunk of the family car when all of a sudden, the two suspects just came up from out of nowhere. They didn't say a word, they said. Instead, they said the two suspects just started shooting.
The other sister and family friend told Bay News 9 off camera that everything happened so fast, they had no idea what to do.
Meantime, deputies say Quitanar was indeed the target and that it wasn't a random act. Right now, there is no motive.
As for the victim's family, they want the two suspects to face attempted murder charges.
When asked what they want to happen to the suspects once they are caught, Quitanar said, "I want them to go to jail."
The victim's family tells us he is recovering from surgery tonight at Bayfront Medical Center.
